Steel Concrete Reinforcement Replacement? • FRP bars are being researched to replace steel reinforcement in concrete. • The corrosive effects of steel reduce the life of concretes structures. • FRP composites are corrosion resistant, lightweight, and have high strength. • Easy construction and handling • Applications include the construction of new FRP bridge deck systems, new concrete decks with reinforcing FRP rebar, and the strengthening and repair of existing structures.
Presently… • FRP composites are still under testing and research. • Connections are difficult. • The fiber-reinforcement can’t be bent in the field without reducing the strength of the material. • More designing efforts are required for this material.
