  1. Reviewing 20 Years of ILTER Research Draft Ben Li, Terry Parr This work is supported by: Public Policy Committee

  2. Introduction • Project overview • Status • Preliminary findings • First briefs • Monitoring and Assessment • Upcoming work • We need your help

  3. Project Overview Develop annual reporting of key outputs from the network: • (a) lists of publications based on LTER sites • (b) lists of data produced • (c) summaries of key research results and applications to policy, resource management, business etc.

  4. Status • March-April 2013 • Collected and indexed LTER research outputs • Developed research database (bibliographic info + abstracts) • May-June 2013 • First cut at data • Identified major themes by external frameworks • July-September 2013 • Outlined potential internal and external briefs

  5. Preliminary Findings • 30,000 reports (articles, books, chapters, theses, other publications) from 1744-2013 • 30,000 EML data items • 30 networks represented • 60+ network websites, repositories, portals with reports and data • Around 10 languages via machine translation  This is all searchable through a new web-based tool (ask later)

  6. What is an ILTER research output? Literature • Items on LTER Europe list of outputs • Reference on network or member website or database • Items in Mendeley or otherwise identified by participants (e.g., in annual reports) Data • Indexed by KNB, other metacats, other EML repositories • Other data … Counting and definitions should be discussed going forward.

  7. Member Network Publications

  8. Member Network Pubs (Cumulative) (1990-)[excluding top three]

  9. (Policy) Frameworks and Language • Frameworks • ICSUGrand Challenges • GEOSocietal Benefit Areas • ESAEcological Visions Project • ILTERScientific and Technological Trends • Language • Are we discussing about the same things? • Intent: NOT to replace personal and network relationships, expertise, or negotiations; but to help discover new possibilities

  10. Policy briefs

  11. First science/policy briefs • Monitoring and Assessment • Reviewed by PPC and reiterating • Societal, cultural, economic, historic dimensions • To be reviewed and iterated • ILTER Conceptual Framework and other frameworks • To do • Ecosystem Services • To do • Disasters • To do • Others?

  15. Monitoring and Assessment highlights • Over 1000 ILTER outputs concerning M&A • Abstracts and full text of 140 items • Authors listed affiliations in 35 jurisdictions: Albania, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Czech, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and United States. (Note: These are not necessarily ILTER Network affiliations.) • Overlap between ILTER M&A outputs and frameworks: ILTER Strategic plan (2006) themes, Conceptual Framework for ILTER Science, ICSU Grand Challenges, GEO Societal Benefit Areas, and Millennium Assessment Ecosystem Services.

  16. Upcoming Work • Process outputs from: Australia, Mexico, South Africa, Taiwan, Venezuela • Process additional outputs from: Bulgaria, CERN (grey lit), Czech Republic, Finland, France, Hungary, Japan, Latvia, SK, Slovenia, Switzerland • Discover outputs from: Canada, Costa Rica, Israel, Jordan, Lithuania, Malawi, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, (Norway), Philippines, Portugal, S. Korea, Thailand

  17. Upcoming Work • Document databases and data sources not in EML databases (too complex) • Data cleaning, multi-lingual challenges • Positioning among current/future LTER IM initiatives? • …

  18. Your Help • Fill gaps in the publications for your own networks • Especially grey literature • Also, translation issues • Provide comments on drafts of briefs [business meeting] only mention that it has been done • Ensure your network’s outputs are represented • Common ILTER publications library? • And accessibility/discovery strategies?

  19. Conclusions • (a) lists of publications based on LTER sites – Mostly complete • (b) lists of data produced – ??? • (c) summaries of key research results and applications to policy, resource management, business etc. – Ongoing
