  10. SPE is Formed • 1950s • The Petroleum Branch of AIME became the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) of AIME • First SPE Board of Directors meeting was held 6 October 1957 • Membership was 12,500

  11. Service Excellence • 1960s • First issue of SPE Journal • Distinguished Lecturer series • Monograph series • Reprint series • Offshore Technology Conference

  12. Long Range Vision • 1970s • Membership doubled in this decade • First Long Range Plan developed • Would make SPE a true international society • First SPE Forum held • Foundation is started

  14. Stable Growth • 1980s • 1985 – SPE incorporated separately from AIME • Growth in professional membership • Industry suffered a downturn • Roughly half of all jobs were lost • SPE membership remained stable, between 48,000 and 52,000 members

  15. Diversity • 1990s • Section growth was increasing, SPE was becoming more diverse • The largest number of new sections in the eastern hemisphere (40+) • Cultural Diversity Committee was formed • First non-US and first woman presidents elected

Disseminating Technical Knowledge • Meetings and conferences – 1.3 million attendees • Papers – 50,000+ • Books – 95 titles, 360,000 copies sold • Periodicals – 7 titles, 1,300 issues published • eLibrary – More than 4,000,000 downloads • SPE.org unique visitors – 150,000 in 2007, 65% increase since 2005
