  1. A Quick Review of James • Book could emerge out of the last verse showing us what causes us to wander • 1:1-3:12 shows us illustratively what is most typical; not exhaustive • Trials, 1:2-12: Count it all joy • Temptations, 1:13-18 God gives every good and perfect gift • Hearing but not doing the Word of God, 1:19-27, Pure religion shows itself in deeds

  2. The Things that caus us to Wander1:1-3:12 Prejudice, 2:1-13, exalting us and our kind over others: familial, ecclesial, denominational, geographical, racial, theological Professing that we possess faith when there is no fruit, 2:14-26. Saved by faith alone but not by faith which remains alone The Tongue, 3:1-12, mentioned in three different situations in James, Largest and most indicative of profession without possession

  3. THEN what we most need: Wisdom3:13-18 • Worldly Wisdom: rational and logical according to unredeemed human thinking, most prevalent, 3:13-16 • Godly Wisdom: rational and logical emerging from the Word of God through the Spirit of God, 3:17-18

  4. THEN what wars against the wisdom of God, 4:1-5:12 • Worldliness, 4:1-10, 4 cf. 11. Given the remedy in 7-10 • Condemnation, Control, and Comfort. The remedy is suffering, 4:11-5:6 • The root of both is pride and the remedy for both is humility lived out with integrity and no duplicity

  5. FINALLY, the Key is Right Worship rooted in proper prayer, 5:7-18 • Prayer must be as God defines it • Prayer must be directed to God and His glory • Prayer must not terminate on us and our wants or our will • Prayer must be done as a part of the church not as individuals isolated from the body • Prayer must come out of a community that cares enough to confess sin so as to experience ultimate healing.
