Insight into Book the Second,Chapter 13“The Fellow of No Delicacy”
At the beginning of Chapter 13 (first paragraph), notice how Sydney’s mood doesn’t seem to be impacted by the idealistic Manette household—yet he still comes there often.
In the second paragraph of Chapter 13, pay close attention to the habit that Sydney has developed instead of sleeping.
On page 151, Sydney cries in front of Lucie. Be sure you can explain why (which is illustrated in his view of himself).
On page 152, Sydney explains to Lucie why—even if she DID love him—he could never accept her love. Make sure you understand why he says he is thankful that she does not love him.
Lucie, in her role as the “recaller” of people to life, attempts to talk Sydney into allowing her to help him turn his love for her into good for himself. Make sure you understand Sydney’s response in the last big paragraph on page 152.
On page 154, it’s Lucie’s turn to weep. Why does she weep “mournfully”?
You will want to know that the word “supplication” (last paragraph on page 154) means “humble request”—AND you will want to know what that supplication is.
Sydney expresses the depth of his love for Lucie in the last paragraph of page 154. Make sure you underline (in orange) that Sydney tells Lucie, “For you, and for any dear to you, I would do anything.”You will NOT want to forget that this promise he makes to her—because it may well be the most important promise in the book.
You will want to know that the word “supplication” (last paragraph on page 154) means “humble request”—AND you will want to know what that supplication is. (IMPORTANT NOTE: The request Sydney makes of Lucie is extremely important—and it’s not something he wants her to do. It’s something he wants her to remember. Underline what he wants her to remember at the top of page 155.)
