Identifying Specific Transitions in Smoking Cessation for Interventions Submitted by Yong Yi on behalf of the Tobacco Control Research Program and the LSU HCSD Research Program
TCI Program Logic Based on PHS Clinical Guideline(see www.ahrq.gov/clinic/tobacco/5steps.htm) ASK:determine tobacco use status for every patient at every visit Clinic responsibilities ADVISE:advise to quit ASSESS:assess readiness to make a quit attempt ASSIST:provide assistance in quit attempt TCI staff responsibilities ARRANGE:follow-up contact and support
Non smoker /permanent quitters recent relapsers 180-day sustained quitters 90-day sustained relapsers 90-day sustained quitters 180-day sustained relapsers recent quitters current smokers
Objective • Based on their past smoking history, classify patients into several relatively homogeneous groups with regard to their smoking habits and motivation to quit. • Identify transitions in the smoking cessation process that might be targeted by interventions. • Estimate the potential effect of a transition-targeted intervention on ultimate smoking prevalence within the LSU HCSD patient population.

Plan of Analysis • June-July: Investigate the structure of the diagrams and state definitions such that model. • August-October: Estimate the transition probability, and carry out statistical inference on the effectiveness of intervention such as the frequency of screening and advising, selected evidence-based assistance, etc. • November-December: Estimate the impact of the intervention on each transition on the overall prevalence. Apply the model on sub-group of patients.
