Duck and Cover • Method of protection • Issued by the US government • The biggest group of people the “Duck and Cover” method was taught to school children between the 1950s to the 1980s. • Procedure • Find sturdy shelter(ex: desk, table, ect.) • Sit on knees and place head into lap. • Clasp your hands together and place your hands on the back of your neck. Fallout Shelters • civil defense measure intended to reduce deaths in a nuclear war. • A basic fallout shelter consists of shielding that reduces gamma-ray exposure • Concrete, bricks, earth, and sand are some of the materials that are dense or heavy enough to provide fallout protection. • walls at least 12 inches thick • According to civil defense authorities, a concrete block basement shelter could be built as a do-it-yourself project. • Ventilation in the shelter was provided by a hand-cranked blower attached by a pipe to a filter mechanism on the surfaces for $150 to $200 at the time Click on the picture and scroll to the bottom of page to see how the City of Dallas ‘ Fallout Shelter was set up.
Nuclear Testing • Between July 16, 1945 and September 23, 1992 the United States of America conducted (by official count) 1054 nuclear tests • There were actually a few surface tests included in the official test count conducted after November 4, 1962
