TIMELINE • World War II – Korea controlled by Japan • End of World War II - Korea broken into two: • Soviet Union occupies the North • United States occupies the South • Divided at the 38thParallel • Each government (North and South) wants to unify Korea • 1949, China becomes a Communist country, joining the Soviet Union and putting fearing in America that the “Domino Theory” is, in fact, taking place! • 1950, North Korea invades South Korea trying to unify country by force – Korean War begins!
THE KOREAN WAR The Korean War lasted from June 25, 1950 until July 27, 1953. 3 Phases: North Korea attacks South Korea and takes over most of South Korea South Korea (aided by the UN) counterattacks and takes over most of N. Korea Last phase consisted of back and forth fighting that led to a stalemate and an armistice at the 38th Parallel which still exists to this day!
