Suicide: A Public Health Priority • Suicide is a major social and public health issue • A cause of early death and increased mortality rates • Devastating impact on family and friends • Huge financial burden to the economy • From April 2013 the co-ordination of suicide reduction became a local authority responsibility under the guidance of Health & Wellbeing Boards • Public Health Outcome Framework indicators: suicide rates, premature mortality, unintentional injuries and wellbeing measures

The figures for Cheshire & Merseyside • National suicide rate for England 8 per 100,000 in 2012 • Cheshire & Merseyside rate of 8.16 per 100,000 in 2012 • Range of 6.83 to 10.42 across nine local authorities • Range of 6.4 to 12.2 per 100,000 across 12 CCGs • 2010-2012 583 deaths due to suicide across Cheshire & Merseyside, at a cost to the economy of £991 million • Suicidal attempts estimated at 13,884 • Suicidal thoughts estimated at 82,288

The Network Programme Board Provides leadership, strategic vision, advocacy and support and direction to the Operational GroupOperational GroupImplement strategy and suicide reduction action plan for the Cheshire Merseyside footprint Gains information from local groups and stakeholders of effective practice and develops joint working for mutual benefit Reports via the champs mental wellbeing programme to the Programme Board Local Groups Implement local measures, local action plans, provide reports to local Heath & Wellbeing Boards Wider Stakeholders- contribute specialist knowledge as appropriate. Provides link to wider community and acts as a critical friend
