Chapter Main Ideas • Motives behind putting a “jetport” in the middle of the Everglades • Physical Placement • Implications for future growth • Both against regionalist perspectives of keeping the Everglades clear of the nuisances of civilization • Friends of the Everglades • Founded Novemeber 1969 • Led by Marjory Stoneman Douglass ( who was 79 at the time) • “ a grassroots organization…to insure a better future for the Everglades which is the heart of the region of South Florida” • Importance was to speak directly to the public about the necessity of protecting the Everglades from the airport and similar things • Helped get the “protect the Everglades” message out into the public, especially at a time when the Everglades needed the help • Joe Browder • Was able to save the Everglades jet planes, a mass transit system, and urban sprawl

Train – persuaded the Governor to authorize a study about the Everglades • Luna Leopold • “ It is necessary to grasp the most important fact about the Everglades: namely that it is not a great swamp, as it appears, but actually a free-flowing river” • Port Authority was extremely adamant about building the jet port and how it would bring a city in the middle of SW Florida • Alan Stewart “ We’ll keep a few trees up and hire an Indian guide to take tourists on jungle cruises – we’ll protect your environment.” • June 1969 Hearings • Committee members voted against the jetport with the scientific backing from Leopold
