Objectives The principle objective is to create, from within the halls of superior education, space for reflection about the complex environmental problems of our times, proposing forms for intervention and management of our natural resources that are more considerate of our environment. In this sense, this initiative is trying to create a network of institutions of superior education that promotes the development of a scientific-technological community at the highest level in the distinctive levels that make up the future doctoral program and that develop among all the activities and strategies destined towards recognition and the homologation of the title of doctorate that will be granted by all the institutions.
Specific Objectives • Creation of a Euro/Latin American network of experts in Environmental Sciences and in Sustainable Development for the creation of a study. • Up-date the professors who will participate in the Doctorate at a Distance in the use of the technologies that will permit them to participate in this post-graduate program. • To train the professors in the elaboration of instructional materials so that they can produce On-Line materials that will facilitate learning by the students. • To fortify the links between universities that offer and support post-graduate programs that are imparted on-line or at a distance. • To promote the development of a scientific-technological community at the highest level, in Environmental Sciences and Sustainable Development. • To define strategies for the standardization of diplomas and for academic recognition.
Concrete results anticipated • The publication of studies and/or of the results of meetings and/or of seminaries. • Institutional documents resulting from meetings related to the project. • Implimentation of proposals for academic improvement and for the initiation of changes within the sphere of superior education. • The preparation of websites for the electronic diffusion of debates and of documents of importance for institutional and academic use. • Manuals for academic and administrative use..
Results • Professorsof the courses for the first two years of the program trained in On-line and part-time-residence education. Results will be seen in the elaboration of materials and programs for the courses. • Materials for the courses of the first two years ready to be put on the website of the program. The results will be seen with the identification of prepared materials and evaluated when the students use them. • The identification of the teaching and learning strategies that are most adequate for use in this type of program. Results and evaluation will be similar to that of point 7. • The production of strategic documents for the doctorate. These will be defined by the Major-field commissions; Results and evaluation will be similar to that of point 7.
Results • Reports from each training session and from the co-ordination meetings. The results of this will be seen in the presentatión of each one of them at the end of the activity and it will be the advances of the Alpha program which evaluate the accomplishment of the objectives set up for each activity. • Functional capacity of the website .Creation and consolidation of the interconnecting systems and connectivity on the level of institutions of superior education of the region, that lead to the development of sites for forming societies of knowledge, using and improving the potential of highly qualified human resources of the region. Evaluation will be in the in the ability to connect onto, and the capacity for answers from all the participants. • To create spaces for discussion and dialogue through these societies of knowledge, which should contribute to a high level of post-graduate education and to the specialization of all the professionals of the region. This will be evaluated by the links established with other professionals and institutions of the region.
Other results expected • Establish methodological sinergies for the design of a Euro/Latin-American doctorate in Environmental Sciences and Sustainable Development among all the universities which make up the Web. • Define the contents of the doctorate, and the contributions and role of each one of the associates. • Establish the methodological criterium for the doctoral course. • Establish the mechanisms for the recognition of credits between participating universities.. • The creation of a Euro/Latin-American On-line doctorate in the management of our natural resources and the conservation of our environment.
Other results expected • Promote the development of a high-level scientific-technological community in the distinctive majors which make up this Doctoral Program. • The creation of a Website for co-ordination among the participants in the network. • Publication of materials and documents. • Establish criterium for the recognition of titles granted by each of the participating universities.

Title to be granted • The Doctoral program will grant a degree in Doctor of Natural Sciences for Development in: • 1) Systems of Agricultural Production • 2) Management of our Natural Resources • 3) Environmental Management and Culture • The Doctoral Diplomas will be granted jointly by the participating universities and by the regulatory commission of the program.
Activities Design, preparation, and putting in practice of tools for introduction into the institutions, and/or for the preparation, publication, and application of tasks to be executed within the perimeters of the project. • Training of at least 20 Latin-American professors possessing doctoral degrees and members of the Program in Costa Rica, Mexico and Nicaragua, so as to be able to put their courses On-line. • Creation of a website for those who make up the network. • Design and elaborate the contents of the future doctorate.. • In-person meetings and stays of short duration in the countries participating in the network. • To succeed in having 75 per cent of the courses of the program On-line in the first semester of 2006. • Design of the websites, interconnected between the member universities.
