Dumesic and Prof. Manos Mavrikakis, University of Wisconsin- Madison • Technical accomplishments: • Studied the Effect of reaction conditions ( Temperature, pressure, feed flow rates) on the conversion of concentrated sorbitol and glucose solutions into ketones, alcohols, organic acids and other hydrophobic compounds over PtRe/C catalyst • Operated catalytic upgrading processes to convert aforementioned hydrophobic compounds into gasoline and diesel fuel additives Major breakthroughs: Characterized alloy formation in Pt-Re catalysts and used this information to speculate upon a reaction mechanism. Also determined that mono-functional compound produced in conversion of sorbitol over PtRe/C can be used in aldol condensation, aromatization and other upgrading processes • PIRE Activities: • Attended CAMD Summer School • -Learned DFT techniques required theoretically study • PtRe catalysts • Other Efforts/Outreach: • Mentorship of an undergraduate student
