NSF-TUES Grant – 2013-2015“Integrating Virtual 3D Lab Modules for Flood Modeling Studies in Civil Engineering Curriculum” Chandramouli Viswanathan, PhD, PE Associate Professor of Civil Engineering Mechanical Engineering Department Purdue University Calumet
Overview • Acknowledgement • Initial Steps • Collaborative Effort • Progress
Acknowledgement • My dear student groups from Purdue Calumet • Prof. Chenn Zhou, CIVS, Purdue Calumet • Prof. George Nnanna , ME Department, Purdue Calumet • Prof. Emily Hixon , Department of Education, Purdue Calumet • Mr. John Moreland , CIVS, Purdue Calumet • Prof. Ramesh Teegavarappu, Florida Atlantic University • Prof. Jimmy Fox, University of Kentucky • Prof. Pradeep Behera, University of District Colombia • Dan Repay, Little Calumet River Commission • Our Research Department – Kristin, Maria, Laurie, Maja
Initial Steps • Time Line • 2010 to 2013 • ME department Prof. Zhou initiated a brainstorming session. All the faculty members participated in that sessions. • Initial suggestions were provided • Importance of reading the RFP fully to identify focus points • Transferability, evaluation process, innovation • Collaboration
Initial Steps • I chose flooding as main focus • We had 2008 Ike Storm and severe flooding • Had experiential learning with Little Calumet River Commission • Collected data in stages through Senior Design Groups • CIVS center – Great Resource • We did brainstorming sessions • Main objective: How 3D models help students in learning? • Decided to include an expert to conduct evaluation from Education Department • Had plans to have one or two faculty from other universities (who teach similar courses like me so that they can use the model) • How we can benefit the community in Northwest Indiana?
2011 Submission Data from Northwest Indiana Prof. Chenn Zhou, CIVS, Purdue Calumet Prof. George Nnanna , ME Department, Purdue Calumet Prof. Emily Hixon , Department of Education, Purdue Calumet Mr. John Moreland , CIVS, Purdue Calumet Prof. Ramesh Teegavarappu, Florida Atlantic University Prof. Jimmy Fox, University of Kentucky Prof. Pradeep Behera, University of District Colombia Dan Repay, Little Calumet River Commission Hydrologic Model Hydraulic Model 3D model Development 3D model lab in CE 342 class Evaluation Northwest Indiana Community Distribute to other Universities Inter University Use & K12 Education
2011 Submission – Essential Features • Asked fund to develop • Hydraulic and Hydrologic Models • 3D Model • Conduct Evaluation at Purdue Calumet • Invite other faculties who teach course similar to CE 342 and distribute it to them for their use • Use the 3D model for K12 Education
Review Results • 5 member reviewer panel • 1 – Excellent • 1 – Very good • 3 – Satisfactory • Main drawbacks cited: • 3D lab facility in other schools – will it be transferable? • Why should TUES should fund 3D model development? • Why the authors had spent so much time in explaining the system details? • Evaluation – link the objectives to evaluation process
2012 Submission • We attended all their suggestions carefully. We mentioned it in the revised proposal. • Spoke to Project Director. Prof. Zhou visited the Project Director and obtained few feedbacks • Through my Graduate student, an initial 3D model was developed in Unity Platform. • So we are only revising the existing model and make it suitable for use. • We included faculties from other universities (University of Kentucky, Florida Atlantic University and University of District Colombia) as co PIs • So they will simultaneously implement the 3D model in their classes too • Showed a tie-up with Little Calumet River Commission • Strengthened Evaluation Plan
Got Funded • The proposal got through initial screening. • Lot of questions were posed to the research team on different logistics by the Program Coordinator • Conducted brain storming sessions with all the faculty colleagues and a reply was submitted. • IRB approvals – were obtained from all the schools. • NSF awarded it in 2013 June. • Pre and Post tests, 3D lab implementation – successfully achieved in Spring 2014.
