Tendite in astra viri. That is our school’s logo. It shows It’s patron , who is Hetman Jan Tarnowski. He was Poland’s military officer in XIV centrury . The inscription you saw at the beginning , „ Tendite in astra viri ” is our school’s motto. It means : „Reach for the stars ”.

Ourschool’snameis: Zespół Szkół Społecznych im. Jana Hetmana w Tarnobrzegu But It’s not only a school. Thisis a place wherehistory and mythsmeetmodernity. Wherebothlifelongtradition and freshteenagers’ point of viewmatter. A place of education, entertainment and a uniqueatmosphere .
WE ARE HERE Firstly, we are a schoollocatedinTarnobrzeg, Poland.
Ithas a population of about 50,000 people. • Itisknow for it’shugesulfurmines.
Itlies on theshore of theriverVistula (pictureatthebottom). • It’sthemainriver of Poland . • Vistula starts high inthe mountains and aftercrossing Poland, fallsintotheBalticsee.
Tarnobrzeg was foundedinthe XIV century by the Tarnowski family. Yes, itisthefamilyfromwhichour patron comesfrom. In thecloseneighbourhood of ourschoolisthecity’smainsquarewith a war hero’s Bartosz Głowacki statue(to theleft).
Thatisthemainsquare, namedafterthe war hero, but it’scommonlycalled „red sqaure”.
Thatisthe symbol of Tarnobrzeg,theDominican Monastery from XVII century. As youcansee, itislocatedclose to the „red sqaure”. Ourschoolisjustbehindthecorner.
Ourpresentlocation on Dominikanska Street. In 1998/1999 ourschooltransfered to this, much morecomfortable, locationinthecentre of thecity’s old town.

That’sourschool’sdungeon, prettycreppy, isn’tit? Thareare many legendsregardingitthataretied to therichhistory of ourschool’sbulding.
After the year 1989,due to many reforms of Polish educational system, a lot of private schools started to be founded all over our country. The idea appeared also in Tarnobrzeg, where a group of ambitious teachers from different schools decided to start the Tarnobrzeg’s Common Educational Society. In 1990, with the help of a few future students’ parents and the local administration, they established the First Social High Schoolunder the patronate of hetman Jan Tarnowski, commonly called „the Hetman”.
In the beginning, the school had to fit in only one wing of the ground floor in the building where nowadays the Tarnobrzeg’s Agency of Regional Development is located. Ithadbeenthereuntil 1998/1999. The Hetman’s building is located on Dominikanska Street and has long and interesting history.
TheHetman’sbuildingused to be a part of Tarnowski countship’sproperties and served as a stable. Thisthereasonwhyour patron is hetman Tarnowski of Leliwa arms. To theright: Tarnowski’sarms, Leliwa.
Then, thedistrictcourt was movedinthere. Thedungeon we showedyoubeforeearnedit’schillingtalesfromthat period. But enoughhistory, let’smove to moreup-to-dateevents.
ThatistheExam of Maturity, orinPolish: matura In Poland, attheage of 16 you start a 3-year high schoolor a vocationalschoolendedwithExam of Maturity – a big test wchichenablesyou to go to university.
Most studentschoosethe first optionwhich we called LICEUM. In public institutionsyoudecide on youreducatinaldirection, youcanchoose, for example, math and physicsorart, and youaregiven a particularschelude. Althoughyouhaveyou major classes, youhave to learnallthesubjectin general.
To theleft: Ourchemistryclassroom Ourschoolis a private, so youhave to payfee. But, schedulesaremoreindividual. We alsochoose major subjects, but can mix allcategories, for example, phisics and art.
Chosingyouown major subjectsisimpossiblein public schools. In ourschoolyouconcentratemostly on yourchosensubjects, learning justbasicsfromothers In thelast, third year of LICEUM educationyouonllyhave major calsseswhichallowsyou to foucus on materialthatyou will need for maturaexam

Everybodyknowsthatschoolis not only an educationalinstitution. Thatiswhy we don’tforget to havefuninourschool. We organize many discos, skicamps, trips, festivals and otherevents. Let’sseesome of them!
And more! We alsoorganize: Music and poetryconcerts, Cabartes, Talent shows, Fashionshows, Biology & ChemistryNights.
We alsohaveourinternetschoolnewspaperwhereourstudents post almosteverythingthey want. • Itiscalled „Goniec Hetmański” whichmeans „Captain’smessenger”. Logo of thenewspaper.
Youalreadyknow much aboutourschool and youmust be wondering: „Howdoesitallturns out?” And theansweris: AWESOME
Ourschools was announced to be thebestinourhomecity. It was also4thinourprovince. And 114th in Poland!
Lastyearsexam of maturityturned out to be reallygood for ourstudents. Themathematicsmaturityexamsresoultsplacedourschool on 1th positioninourprovince. And, on 5thpositioninPoland.
Lots of ourstudentstakes part inknowledgecontest. Lastyearsfour of themhad won insubjects: Math, History,Geography, Poetry and Art.
We have a lot of scholarshipholdersinourschooltoo. Thescholarshipsarebothfunded by ourschools and by ourMinistry of Education.
