Simplifying Rational Expressions • Factor the numerator and denominator completely • Cancel any common factors in both the numerator and denominator (you must cancel entire factors only, not portions of factors) • What remains is the simplified expression (you can multiply any remaining factors if you wish)
Multiplying Rational Expressions • Factor the numerator and denominator completely • Cancel any factors common to both a numerator and a denominator • You must cancel entire factors only, not portions of factors • You must cancel factors in pairs (one numerator, one denominator) only • Multiply remaining factors if you wish as you would any fractions
Dividing Rational Expressions • Change division to multiplication by the reciprocal of the 2nd term • Follow the steps for multiplying rational expressions
