  1. Fasteners Spring 2008 Way

  2. What are Fasteners? • Items used to close openings in garments • Openings may meet or overlap

  3. Kinds of Fasteners • Buttons • Hooks and Eyes • Hook and Loop • Snaps • Zippers

  4. Buttons • Two kinds: sew-through and shank. Sew-through buttons have holes cut through. Shank buttons have a metal or plastic loop on the back. • Decorative and functional. • Used on openings that overlap. • Attach using a double strand of thread. • For sew-through buttons: Mark position with a pin. Position button and place a pin on top to give space for fabric to go under button. Sew back and forth five or six times. For heavy duty wear, remove pin, and wind thread around and create a strong shank. Secure. • Apply shank button: Sew on button loosely and wind thread under the button to form a small shank

  5. Hooks and Eyes • More secure than snaps • Use where there is extra strain • Hook is placed on the inside of the garment • Place eye opposite

  6. Hook and Loop • Used on edges that overlap usually in sports clothes, children’s clothes, jackets, and craft items. • Two strips of nylon, one side fuzzy and one side has tiny loops. • Cut the desired size. • Place fuzzy side of the strip underneath the overlap side and the hook strip on the under lap. • Stitch around on four sides by machine and backstitch. • Trim threads.

  7. Snaps • Used to hold overlapping edges together • Not much strain • Two sections: Ball and socket • Place ball half on the underside of overlapping section and secure • Place socket opposite and secure

  8. Zippers • Variety of lengths and widths • Sewn in place • Need a special presser foot • May be sewn in centered or lapped • Invisible zippers
