Learn about biodiversity, habitat destruction, reintroduction, and conservation processes. Engage in a debate on species reintroduction and its impact on biodiversity. Understand the importance of conservation efforts for the future of wildlife and habitats. Take home messages on human impact and the need for biodiversity conservation in Scotland.

What we are going to learn about • To continue to use the terms: biodiversity, habitat and habitat destruction • To understand the term reintroduction • Have a debate about what species we could reintroduce and why
Scenario 1: Don’t do anything • If we keep emitting gases and pollution what do you think will happen? • Will biodiversity change or not? • Climate Change will increase • We will be left with earth that is not productive and hasn’t got any wildlife or biodiversity in it at all!
Scenario 2:Conservation • Stop polluting & destroying habitat • Will biodiversity change or not? • The deer and the wildcats and the forests and habitats we’ve got will be saved.
Scenario 2:Conservation • How can we help conserve what we’ve got in Scotland? • Will helping on a small scale make a difference to the world?
Scenario 3:Reintroduction/rewilding Will biodiversity change or not? This was a very positive view point, we need to remember that there will be negative effects as well…
Species that might be reintroduced I’ll give each group a species You have to discuss and work out which bullet points go in which column… Good or bad effects Decide your top points for the debate!
Quick Recap from all lessons • What is biodiversity and why do we care? • PAST: Local (in Scotland) extinctions mean biodiversity has changed • PRESENT: Interaction of species means the whole system is out of balance when threatened • FUTURE: Rewilding: is it a good idea or not?
Take home messages • Humans have changed the biodiversity in really dramatic ways • We need to conserve the biodiversity we have in Scotland now. • But the future is up to you guys!
