WHO At the World Health Assembly in May 2018 delegates agreed an ambitious new strategic plan for the next five years, designed to help the world achieve the Sustainable Development Goals – with a particular focus on SDG3: ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all at all ages by 2030. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: Director General WHO: said the following prior to the opening of the assembly "This is a pivotal health Assembly. On the occasion of WHO’s 70th anniversary, we are celebrating 7 decades of public health progress that have added 25 years to global life expectancy, saved millions of children’s lives, and made huge inroads into eradicating deadly diseases such as smallpox and, soon, polio. But the latest edition of the World Health Statistics, shows just how far we still have to go.  Too many people are still dying of preventable diseases, too many people are being pushed into poverty to pay for health care out of their own pockets and too many people are unable to get the health services they need. This is unacceptable,"

WHO The World Health Statistics 2018 • Less than half the people in the world today get all of the health services they need. • In 2010, almost 100 million people were pushed into extreme poverty because they had to pay for health services of their own pockets. • 13 million people die every year before the age of 70 from cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes and cancer – most in low and middle-income countries. • Every day in 2016, 15 000 children died before reaching their fifth birthday

Sexual Health & Rights Key Issues • Body Integrity & Sexual Safety • Freedom from all Forms of Sexual Violence • Right to make Informed & Responsible Choices about Reproduction • Right to Contraceptive Advise • Inclusion in Education Programmes as the Norm • Freedom from Contracting Sexually Transmitted Diseases • Prevention of & Care for Infertility • Access to Safe Motherhood • Rights of Disabled Women

Sexual Health : Sexual Transmitted Infections, HIV & AIDS • More than 1 million STIs are acquired everyday worldwide • Annually estimated 357 million new infections with 1 of 4 STIs: chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis & trichomoniasis • HIV continues to be a major public health issue • At end of 2017 estimated 36.9 million worldwide living with HIV with 1.8 million new cases annually million • Effect of lifelong Antiretroviral Therapy • WHO highlight need to strengthen linkages between Sexually Transmitted Infections & HIV in the context of Human Rights & Gender Equality

Maternal Health, Perinatal & Antenatal Health • Worldwide estimated 140 million women give birth every year • WHO: The Proportion of Births delivered by skilled attendants is key indicator for achieving SDG targets 3,1 & 3.2 • Aim ~ Making Childbirth a Positive Experience • Need for: • Good healthcare facilities & essential resources • Competent & motivated staff

  8. Communicable Diseases A major risk factor for infectious diseases and mortality is the lack of safe water, sanitation and hygiene services • Tuberculosis • Malaria • Hepatitis B

A Nutritious Diet • Malnutrition & hunger are seen as number one risk to health • 2017 : worldwide estimated 815 million people were undernourished • Food is also at the core of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), • Ending hunger, and ensuring access by all people to safe, nutritious food • Ending all forms of malnutrition • Ensuring sustainable food production systems • Doubling the agricultural productivity & incomes from small-scale food producers • The Five Keys to Safer Food Programme (WHO)
