Bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in males, eighth most common in females, and fifth leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States.
Types of Bladder Cancer There are two board types of cancer in the bladder: • Primary Bladder Cancer This type of cancer occur within the bladder. • Secondary/Metastatic Cancer This type of cancer occurs somewhere else in the body and spread to the bladder.
Possible Risk Factors • Smoking • Heredity • Extremely high consumption of saccharin • Exposure to certain chemical compounds, such as aniline dyes, naphthalene or benzidines • History of schistosomiasis, a parasitic bladder infection • Frequent urinary-tract infections, particularly after age 50
Signs and Symptoms Often symptoms do not appear in the early stages. The first warning sign is usually blood in the urine. Other symptoms can be, • Pain and burning with urination • Increased frequency of urination and, • Difficulty in urinating
Detection and Diagnosis • Bladder cancer can be detected by examining the bladder through a cystoscope, examining cells in the urine, or performing intravenous pyelography. • Sometimes a large tumor can be detected through a rectal or vaginal exam.
