Bladder Cancer Bladder cancer, like any other cancer, is the rapid and uncontrolled growth of cells. As the name suggests this one occurs in the bladder, the organ which stores the urine that is produced by the kidneys, found in the lower pelvis.The disease is much more prevalent in males, occurring 3 to 4 times more in males than females. 9 out of 10 people suffering from this disease are above the age of 55, and average age of patients is around 70-75.
Symptoms of Bladder cancer • Blood or blood clots in the urine (hematuria), usually not painful • Frequent urination • Not being able to pass urine • Pain in lower back (where kidneys are) • Swelling in legs
Causes of Bladder Cancer • The cause of bladder cancer, like most cancers, remains unknown, although there are certain risk factors that are known, smoking being the major one. Smokers are 3 times more likely to develop bladder cancer than an average non-smoker. Other risk factors include: • History of bladder defects from birth • Prolonged chemical exposure (e.g. arsenic, heavy metals) • Not drinking enough fluids • Radiation • Chronic bladder inflammation
Treatment and Management • Treatment depends upon the type of cancer and its stage, and factors such as the patient’s age, health are taken into consideration.
