  4. EXTERNSHIP PRE-REQUISITES SUCCESSFUL completion of all Core Courses and pre-requisites outlined by program.

  5. EXTERNSHIP STANDARDS • Externships take place in your final quarter • Students will not be paid while on extern • Students will not substitute for hired staff • Must complete a minimum of 160 hours or moredepending on your program

  6. EXTERNSHIP HOURS COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS • MA – 160 MOA - 160 • MRT – 160 MLT – 230 Micro-Chemistry 460 • MAS – 160 MLT – 230 Immuno-hematology Combined These are the minimum hours needed. Students are encouraged to complete more. Even if you complete your hours early you will continue externing. This is a course like any other. You must complete the term. Unless: An employment opportunity pending In those situations YOU WILLcoordinate your resignation / early dismissal from the Externship with the Medical Program Coordinator and Extern Site Supervisor!!!

EXTERNSHIP EXPECTATIONS • It is a Core Course, (11 – 12 weeks – depending on the term) • Required 73% to pass • Grade based on extern site evaluations and timesheets • Must provide your own transportation • Responsible for submission of weekly time sheets • Completion of all assignments, logs and/or journals • Ability to perform skills and demonstrate professional behavior • Approved attire per – Harrison College Dress Code

  8. The information below applies whether a student is on campus or on extern and is in accordance with Harrison College Guidelines found in the student handbook. DRESS CODE One of the educational aims of Harrison College is to instill in students the awareness of a good business image that is appropriate for any and all offices and does not conflict with the overall image of the company. Harrison College maintains a dress code. It is important for students to understand that tattoos and body piercings may be detrimental in the pursuit of employment. As such, students with visible tattoos and/or body piercings will be addressed individually. Each campus of Harrison College has professional and business casual dress days, both of which are required in the career development course. Veterinary Technology, Health Science students and students enrolled in The Chef’s Academy must wear Harrison College-approved uniforms. Approved uniforms are as follows: Harrison College Student - ID. HARRISON Scrubs HARRISON White Lab Jackets White shirts underneath scrubs – short or long sleeves White Leather Sneakers No large hoop earrings No visible tattoos No visible body piercings other than post earrings (1) in each ear lobe. No head gear ** Failure to comply could result in the student being sent home.

  9. EXTERNSHIP SCHEDULES • Are coordinated by the student and the site supervisor. Hours worked will depend upon the student’s class schedule and the office needs. • Externships are offered during normalphysician office hours: • Mon thru Fri • 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. • Please take the steps needed to arrange your schedule accordingly. • Students who require alternative schedules must locate their own extern site. The site must meet program requirements and be approved by the MPC.

  10. The Program Coordinator Approves and Assigns students to externship sites. RESTRICTIONS • Students cannot use their place of employment as an externship site. • Students cannot extern at a site where they or their family members are patients. • Students cannot extern at a site where personal relationships are established.

  11. Site Assignment Flexibility regarding availability with hours and travel distance will provide the best prospect for placement The Program Coordinator will consider the following to match students to available sites: Student GPA and Attendance opportunities to enhance your educational experience pace of the workplace environment location – whenever possible

  12. Student Recruitment of an Extern Site Students are allowed to obtain their own extern site. (Massage Therapy Students – Please see your Program Coordinator first) If a particular specialty or location is of interest, please complete the Extern Site Recruitment Form , (one for each location) and turn them in to your program coordinator. Please submit your forms as soon as possible! Once placed a student will not be relocated. All locations will be considered based upon program requirements, but are not guaranteed. If any location declines to have externs , the student will be placed at an alternative site.

  13. Additional Documents / Requirements • An Extern Site May Request • An office has the option to refuse a student as an extern if they feel they do not meet their guidelines or standards in any area listed below. • Resume ** • Harrison HIPAA Certificate ** • Copy of current physical and immunization documentation.** • TB Test – Current thru the end of your extern – MA / MLT Students. ** • Interview – with or without skills assessment. • TB Test – for students in other programs. • Unofficial Transcript • Background Check • Drug Screen • Their own – Affiliation Agreement • Their own - Orientation Class. • Please Be Prepared: If a location requests any item listed with a ** and yours is not available, another student will be selected. Please provide for you file as soon as possible.

  14. Limited Criminal History Check Individuals with a felony conviction for: • Prostitution, rape, sexual or violent crimes • Crimes involving abuse or neglect, or knowledge of abuse and failure to report it to authorities • Substance abuse • Larceny, forgery, and fraud • Any prior conditional license, license suspension, fine, or revocation of license COULD RESULT IN THE STUDENT BEING DENIED PLACEMENT AT AN EXTERN SITE. They may also be denied employment after graduation.

  15. RIGHTS OF THE EXTERNSHIP SITE SUPERVISOR Site has a right to terminate an extern for: • Lack of Professionalism • Excessive absences • Poor performance • Conduct that places the health and safety of patients or employees at risk • Breech of confidentiality, • Can result in legal action! HIPAA Privacy and Confidentiality StatementFor Health Science Extern/Job Shadow Opportunity As a Health Science Student Extern, I understand that I will see, hear, and/or otherwise have access to confidential heath care information, and other privileged documents. As such, I understand and agree that I must review and adhere to the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996. Attached you will find a copy of my HIPAA Privacy Training Acknowledgement Form, and my HIPAA Certification. (The Acknowledgement Statement at the end of this document must be signed and kept in the students Medical Program file)

  17. EXTERN ATTENDANCE • The # 1 reason Externs are terminated • Is Poor Attendance! • If you are absent for any reason: • Contact your Site Supervisor • If your supervisor isn't available, leave a message. 2. Make sure to follow – up and confirm they received the message. • Contact the MPC. ABSOULTELY NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS GUIDELINE!

  18. DISCIPLINARY ACTION If TERMINATED while on extern The student: • Must file a petition for another Externship opportunity. • Must appear before the Externship appeal committee. • Will externship at another site, another quarter. Unethical behavior determined to be detrimental to the educational purposes of the program could result in suspension or even expulsion!
