  1. What is Form? Form is the structure or the architecture of music.

  2. Definitions to know: • Sonata Form : Evolved in 18th century. Sonata form refers to the organization of themes and harmonic relationships within a single movement • Minuet and Trio : Typically used in the third movement of classical symphonies. More definitions: • Rondo: A musical form in which the theme is repeated several times with different themes between the repeated themes • Fugue : A process in which a theme is developed in imitation and contrasted with episodic material • Ternary Form : a simple form consisting of a first section, then a second, contrasting section, followed by a repetition of the first section • Binary Form : A design consisting of two contrasting sections Example of Fugue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipzR9bhei_o

  4. Elements of Form • Repetition : May also be called “restatement” because it usually restates the theme. Form depends on this and on contrast • Contrast : It is when you compare two different instruments or it is a set of procedures including stratification, juxtaposition, and interpolation
