  12. What I have learnt on the way • It isn’t easy • Many auditors / consultants have a simplistic view • Bulk carriers and mega yachts have the same issues – but in different ways • Commercial pressure • Problems • Take action and be honest

  14. Problems • Manning levels • Lack of knowledge / understanding • Drills / training • Language • Fatigue • Lack of time • Blame culture

  15. Problems • Assumption • Macho image • Not reporting defects • Poor treatment of crew • Taking ships over too quickly

  16. Take action and be honest • Tell it like it is • Support the crew • Report to Class / Flag the problems, along with the corrective actions • Put everything in writing and communicate clearly

Conclusion While some seafarers may have difficult lives and may see nothing positive for them from the DP, perhaps rarely hearing from him, there are some DPs who themselves are put in difficult situations and who would benefit from additional support from seafarers and shore based management alike.
