Hutu (Haters) vs. Tutsi (Victims) • The Belgians ruled over Rwanda since the 1800’s. • Tutsi’s were favored by the Belgian government. • They were given gov’t jobs and were supposed to rule over Rwanda for the Belgians. • After the Independence movement the Belgians left and the Hutu’s took over. • Hutu’s wanted to get back at the Tutsi’s for years of oppression under Belgian rule. • Hutu’s began systematically killing off the Tutsi’s after the President of Rwanda’s plane was shot down. • Hutu’s blamed the Tutsi’s. • Hutu’s organized a killing squad known as the Interhamawe. • The Interhamawe went around killing the Tutsi’s, trying to wipe them out.
Tutsis were separated from Hutus & hacked to death with machetes along roadsides. Survivor of machete attack U.N. established the International War Crime Tribunal for Rwanda
