Internet Predators * Meeting people you have only talked to on the Internet carries many risks. * If plans are made to visit a person you have never met it is VERY important that you REPORT this person to a teacher, so they can send that information on to the authorities. * Before entering a site attempt to decipher whether the site is curriculum related and developmentally appropriate or whether it is more recreational.
Internet Pornography * Unfortunately inappropriate images are a reality on the internet. * An understanding of the existence of pornographic images is a must. * Students should also know the types of steps to take when they come across it. * Students should also remember to behave in a mature manner when such images are seen. * Please report pornographic sites to the teacher so they can be blocked from student use in the future.
Identity Theft * Sending personal information over an unprotected internet source could cause serious financial problems. * Don’t buy or sell any items on the internet. This type of interaction would necessitate personal information that should not be revealed. * Any site that asks for personal information is not an educationally appropriate site.
Internet Bullying • Understand that a lot of this can go on without a person of authority realizing it. • It is important to know that behavior online should be similar to behavior in the classroom situation. • It is never appropriate to harass a classmate.
Tips for Escaping the Pitfalls of Internet Safety Issues! * Discuss the difference between use of the internet in class and personal use of the internet. * Create a bank of educationally appropriate websites for use as a student resource. * Have students navigate a “Web-Hunt” activity which leads them through types of appropriate and inappropriate sites so they understand the difference.
