Health & Safety in the Textiles Room This PowerPoint will help you understand what health and safety issues you need to consider when working in the textiles room.
What do you need to consider when sewing? • Sewing machines should be sited with care so that leads and work will not obstruct a gangway, and so that the operator will not be knocked by persons passing by. Machines should be on a firm table or worktop at an appropriate height. Lighting needs to be to a standard which is appropriate to detailed work.
What you need to think about when using electrical equipment • Regularly examine flexes, plugs and sockets. Take particular care to examine the lead to the foot control, which can be damaged easily. Remove the plug from the socket before making any adjustments or changing needles. The risk of injury to fingers is especially high when re-threading the machine.
Washing, Drying and Ironing 2.1 All machines must be used strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Tumble dryers must be ventilated to the external air to prevent excessive condensation build up. 2.2 Irons can cause serious burns, and pupils must be carefully supervised while ironing. It is a good idea to use an ironing board attachment to hold the cable out of the way. 2.3 It is essential for children to be taught about the flammability of fabrics. Teachers should ensure that flame retardant materials are used for making children’s night clothes, noting that the legal requirement includes trimmings, threads and linings as well as fabrics. Cookery aprons and soft toys should also be flame retardant.
