Space Systems Engineering and Design Our journeys to the stars will be made on spaceships created by determined, hardworking scientists and engineers applying the principles of science, not aboard flying saucers piloted by little gray aliens from some other dimension. — Robert A. Baker in “The Aliens Among Us: Hypnotic Regression Revisited”, The Skeptical Inquirer, Vol. XII, No. 2, 1988 C. Hall, Randolph 224D cdhall@vt.edu

Space-Relevance of AE Curriculum • Mathematics - space systems must be modeled and analyzed mathematically • Computational methods - space systems models must be analyzed numerically • Mechanics - space systems have mechanical components undergoing static and dynamic loads • Aerodynamics - space systems must be launched through the atmosphere, and sometimes reenter the atmosphere C. Hall, Randolph 224D cdhall@vt.edu
