What is the Dewey Decimal Classification System? In every library there are two types of books, Fiction (or story books) and Non-Fiction (or Information Books). The Dewey Decimal System is a tool that we use to organise Non-Fiction Books. It was created by Melvil Dewey in 1876. The system has 10 classes and uses the book’s subject to decide in which class it belongs in.
Ten main classes in the Dewey Decimal Classification System 000 – Generalities 100 – Philosophy 200 – Religion 300 – Social Sciences 400 – Language 500 – Science and Math 600 – Technology 700 – Arts and Leisure 800 – Literature 900 – Geography and History
000s - Generalities This is also where books on unexplained subjects would be found - like the Loch Ness Monster. Books that fit in this group have many different subjects in them, like - Encyclopedias
100s – Philosophy Books that fit in this group tell about how we think and feel.
200s - Religion Books in this class tell about different religions or stories from the bible.
300s – Social Sciences Books in this group tell about how people live together. Subjects like Holidays, Customs, Governments and the Military Fairy tales and folk tales are also placed in the 300s. Many were written to teach a lesson about how we should behave
400s - Language Books in this group are about different languages or grammar.
500s - Science and Math Books in this group are about Math, Science and things from nature.
600s – Technology This group has books that are about man-made things.
700s – Art and Leisure Books in this group are about things we do for fun.
800s - Literature Books in this group are stories, plays, or poetry. This is the group fiction books were put in long ago when The Dewey Decimal System was first invented. Today we have too many fiction books in our libraries to organize them in this way, so fiction books are in ABC order, by author !
900s – Geography and History Books in this group tell about events of the past and countries of the world.
599.883 Dewey Decimal Classification Call Number When classified each book is given a Call Number. This number can be found on the spine of the book. This number tells us the book’s address – where the book can be found and where it needs to be returned to. It is on the spine so that the Dewey Decimal Classification Call Number can easily be seen.
