Cornell Notes • Conflict is defined as: A struggle between opposing forces. Conflict is one of the most important elements of stories, novels, and plays because it causes the action.
Cornell Notes • What types of conflict do we encounter in literature? • Internal conflict: Occurs within the mind of a character. The character struggles to make a decision, take an action, or overcome a feeling. • External conflict: A character struggles with an outside force (another person, nature, society).
Read the scenarios below. Decide if they are an internal conflict or an external conflict. If it is external, please indicate whether it’s man vs. man, man vs. nature, or man vs. society. Explain how you know which type of conflict the scenario is. How would you solve the conflict? • Matt believed that his friends were mean when they picked on the new student on her first day in their school. • A food fight broke out in the lunchroom.
