Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures Text: Rom. 7:14-25
Rom. 6:1-7 1. What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2. May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3. Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4. Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6. knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7. for he who has died is freed from sin. Col. 3:1-4 1. Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. 3. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Intro Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
Rom. 7:14-25 14. For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. 15. For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. 16. But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. 17. So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 21. I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22. For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, 23. but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. 24. Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25. Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin. Intro Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
Rom. 8:5-8: • Sometimes that “old self” who was “crucified” rises up in our lives. Not merely (just) bad habits, but the old self is ugly, grotesque, is dangerous, and wants control! • Col. 3:3-11: • Paul says saints are to put to death certain things! (These should have been “crucified” at baptism, but they often arise and must be battled and buried all over again) Intro Saints must often fight for control between our fleshly & spiritual desires! Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
Col. 3:3: For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. • “Death” is separation: • Js. 2:26: Physical death is the separation of the spirit from the body. • Eph. 2:1: Spiritual death is man’s spirit separated from God by sin. • We can be dead in sin, or dead to sin (Rom. 6:1-7) • Col. 3:3: “Dead” also indicates the relationship of the Christian to the world and its lusts. • Col. 3:7: Dying to the old life is choosing to no longer live in sin (slaves to sin) but live in righteousness (slaves of obedience) – Rom. 6:16-18 • The problem: Sin didn’t die! • (Rom. 7:21-23: War of two natures) • The pull of the world is ever present: lusts and temptation don’t give up! • Rom. 7:18: The problem is the flesh. “The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” • Christ said of His disciples, “the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Mt. 26:41). Dead to Sin, Alive In Christ Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
Col. 3:3: For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. • Paul shares three lessons that he learned in trying to deal • with his old sinful desires: • Knowledge of the law is not the answer (Rom. 7:9). • Self-determination (to do what is right) doesn’t succeed (Rom.7:15) on its own. • Becoming a Christian does not stamp out all sin and temptation from a person’s life (Rom. 7:22-25). The saint’s “life” must be “hidden in Christ” (Col. 3:3) Gal. 2:20 20. "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. Dead to Sin, Alive In Christ We must be dead to sin (“crucified”) to truly live in Christ! (Gal. 2:20) Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
(NKJV) Col. 3:5: Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. • Col. 3:5: Those who have died (Col. 3:3) are told to “put to • death” (NKJV) certain things • Rom. 8:12-14: If “you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” Gal. 5:24 24. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Fighting for Control Gal. 5:17: Sometimes the old self doesn’t stay dead and needs to be fought and killed all over again! (A constant battle for control between the fleshly and spiritual desires!) Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
Col. 3:5: Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. • Immorality/Fornication (NKJV) • I Cor. 6:13-20: This is a sin that was a problem then and is now. • I Cor. 6:15-16, 18: Our bodies belong to Christ and are not to be used immorally. (Fornication is sin and doesn’t belong in life of saint – Eph. 5:3) • Heb. 13:4: Sex is a sacred thing to be enjoyed between a husband and wife. Fighting for Control Saints are to “put it to death!” Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
Col. 3:5: Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. • Impurity/Uncleanness (NKJV) • This is described as lustful living and sexual perversion. • G167 Akatharsia: Impurity, a state of physical or moral filthiness, especially in relation to sexual sin: moral uncleanness. • Rom. 1:18-32: Moral degradation of a society begins with exchanging the truth of God for a lie and serving the created rather than the Creator (Rom. 1:25). • Rom. 1:24, 26-27: Homosexuality is called “impurity.” • Eph. 5:3: Impurity is not to be named among saints! Fighting for Control Saints are to “put it to death!” Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
Col. 3:5: Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. • Passion • (G3806 “pathos”: a passion; inordinate affection, lust) • Lust is uncontrolled desire and is aroused by dancing, pornography, dirty speech, etc. • Eph. 5:3: Not fitting for the life of a saint! • Js. 1:14-15: We are tempted by what we lust after, which means we want to do it! • When we give in (lose battle with fleshly desires) we are guilty of sin! Fighting for Control Saints are to “put it to death!” Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
Col. 3:5: Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. • Evil Desire • (G1939 “epithumia”: a longing [for what is forbidden]; desire, lust) • Man can control desire. (Sometimes not easy, but can and must be done) • Evil desires describe desires/lusts for things man is forbidden to have by God: fornication, thievery, sexual immorality, etc… • Js. 1:21: Saints are to “put aside” (put to death) all that remains of wickedness! Fighting for Control Saints are to “put it to death!” Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
Col. 3:5: Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. • Greed/Covetousness (NKJV) • The unholy lust/desire things! Eph. 5:3, 5 3. But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; 5. For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Fighting for Control Saints are to “put it to death!” Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
(NKJV) Col. 3:5: Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Immorality (Fornication) Impurity (Uncleanness) Passion Evil desire Greed (Covetousness) Fighting for Control Being alive in Christ requires saints to “put to death” the ways of the old self! Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
Col. 3:4: When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. Col. 3:8-11 8. But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. 9. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, 10. and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him-- 11. a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all. • Col. 3:8-11: Realization of what God in Christ has done for • us – Col. 1:13-14; 3:1 • Rescued us from our sins and sits at the right hand of God! Motivation to “Put to Death” • Confidence in what Christ will do for us – Col. 3:4 • Will come again and we will dwell with Him in His glory Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
Col. 3:4: When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory. • Negative: “Lay aside the old self” (Col. 3:9) • Take action, put sinful living to death! • Sometimes we must battle “crucified” zombies – Gal. 5:24 • Change lifestyles – Col. 3:8-9 • Positive: “Put on the new self” (Col. 3:10) • The new self is to be renewed in the knowledge of Christ – Col. 3:10 • Once the “old self” is put to death, the new self must live according to the knowledge of Christ! Motivation to “Put to Death” Replace evil with good (Col. 3:12-17) For our lives to be truly “hidden in Christ” (Col. 3:3) we must “put to death” the sinful practices of the world! God’s demand does not fit the view of grace some have that says you can go on sinning and God will still take care of you Rom. 6:1-2 1. What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2. May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? The only answer to Paul's wretched condition—and to our own—is Jesus Christ (Rom.7:25) Conclusion Only Jesus makes it possible to fulfill the righteous requirements of a holy God (Rom. 8:3-4), thus, Paul's honesty (Rom. 7:18) led to hope Flesh & Spirit: War Of Two Natures
In confession we can find God's forgiveness; in admitting our weakness we can find His strength; if we deny our true condition, we deceive ourselves, and doom ourselves to lives enslaved to sin (I Jn. 1:8-10) Whatever is in your life that belongs to your “old self” (the world), “put it to death!” (Col. 3:5) R.
