What you need to know • Why housing conditions were so poor in the early 1800s. • The types of accommodation available to working class and middle class people. • Improvements in standards of housing. • The impact of diseases such as cholera on the people. • Why health improved in the 19th and 20th centuries.

  3. Types of Accommodation • Many working class families lived in SINGLE ENDS. This was accommodation which consisted of one room. • Some lived in a ROOM AND KITCHEN. This comprised of 2 rooms. • Better off working class families lived in better conditions with more space and facilities. • Middle and upper class families lived in spacious accommodation with running water and indoor toilets.

  4. Improvements in Housing Between 1830 and 1930 standards of housing gradually improved. • In your notes write down 3 ways in which standards of housing improved between 1830 and 1930. Use page 56 to help you.

  5. Improvements in Housing Overall • Many slums were cleared and new council houses were built. • These new houses had indoor toilets, electricity (in the 1920s), and gardens. They were also much more spacious and hygienic.
