  2. Course Description Introduction: The course focuses primarily on developing speaking and listening skills, since students are still learning basic literacy skills in their native language. There are some activities that include basic reading and writing such as the letters of the English alphabet as well as some simple and short English words and sentences. Goals: Develop basic English skills: speaking, reading, listening, and writing appropriate to their age level. Develop cultural awareness of American culture through comparison with their native culture. Standards: Thecourse follows Standards For Foreign Language Learning (Preparing for the 21st Century) which identify five goal areas: Communication, Connections, Comparisons, Cultures, and Communities. Activities: Activities in the course are based on seven Multiple Intelligences: 1) Linguistic (discussions, dialogues, word games) 2) Logical-mathematical (puzzles, crosswords, questioning) 3) Spatial (slides, videos, imagination games, illustrated books) 4) Bodily-kinesthetic (role-playing, physical games, hands-on learning) 5) Musical ( short rhymes, songs, verses) 6) Interpersonal (group games) 7) Intrapersonal (small projects) to cater to each student individually.   3. Grade Description

  4. Norms and Polices The course requires regular attendance. There is a direct correlation between attendance and course success. If the student is absent from school due to sickness, a parent can make a request to the teacher or the office to receive homework. If the student is absent from school for other reason, homework will not be sent. More than 5 (five) absences may result in failing the course. All students are required to arrive 10 minutes in advance to prepare all necessary paperwork for class. Students may be marked absent if they arrive more than 15 minutes late to any class without a reasonable explanation. Homework (worksheets and speaking monologues) are the part of the course. The nature and amount of homework may vary based on the subject matter topic. Parents need to be supportive, using homework as a way to be positively involved in the child’s learning process, as well as ensure proper attendance. If the student has been unable to complete homework, has not understood it, or spent too much time on it, the teacher should be informed by written or oral explanation. A teacher has the right to require some extra homework for some students(i.e. unsuccessful completion of work during class time.) In this case, the teacher will write a note to the parents explaining the reason(s). Students receiving a grade of D/3- or above will pass the course. Students receiving a grade of F/2 have failed the course and must repeat to increase their knowledge of the subject matter. To complete the course, students must submit of all required homework and classwork worksheets.
