This Either. Don’t let this be you. Safe Emergency VehicleDriving and Operations
Course Objectives • Identify common hazards associated with long distance ambulance transports. • Discuss methods to mitigate these hazards.
Videos To Think About • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTyPnwBAAvg • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1yM2TpXv1Q&feature=related
Group Exercise and Discussion • Objectives • 3 Habits, Actions, or Conditions that create unsafe driving conditions • Ways to combat these unsafe conditions
Drowsiness • Collisions from drowsy driving result in about 1500 deaths and 71000 injuries each year. • Drowsy drivers tend to be more aggressive than non-drowsy drivers. • Drowsiness leads to higher stress levels
Combating Drowsy Driving • Pull over and switch drivers (when practical) or nap if necessary. • Adjust car settings (AC, Radio, Seat etc…). • Wear sunglasses during the day. • Eat high protein snacks, drink water or juice. • Talk with passengers.
Distracted Driving • In 2009, 5,474 people were killed and 448,000 were injured due to distracted driving. • 16% of all fatalities and 20% of all injuries were attributed to distracted driving.
Distractions • Cell Phones • Texting • Eating and Drinking • Talking to Passengers • GPS / Maps • Radio
Combating Distracted Driving • Avoid Cell Phone use when not absolutely necessary. • Texting is prohibited while driving. • Choose foods that are “easier” to eat. Choose a “sit down” restaurant when practical. Swap drivers to allow everyone to eat as a passenger. • Keep eyes on the road even when talking to passengers. • Set GPS before you leave or pull over. Use audio commands rather than visual guides. • Change radio station as little as possible, or allow passenger to make adjustments.
Hazardous Conditions • Inclement weather • Sun glare • Heavy traffic • Other drivers • Animals
Combating Hazardous Conditions • Pull over and wait for hazardous conditions to lessen or pass. • Leave extra space between you and other vehicles.
