What is Graphics Art and Communication? • Graphics Art is typically two dimensional and includes calligraphy, photography, printmaking, typography, etc. • Graphic art also consists of drawn plans and layouts for interior and architectural designs.
Types of Careers available in Graphics Art • Web Design • Photoshop Artist • Multimedia Designer • Marketing • Video Game designer • Photographer • Sales Representative • Computer Engineering • Page- Layout Artist • Bindery Worker The area of this field I might pursue is computer engineering because I might want to make software for a career.
The Uses of Graphic Art • Calligraphy- decorative handwriting or handwritten lettering • Photography- the art or practice of taking and processing photographs • Printmaking- artistic design and manufacture of prints as woodcuts or silk screens • Typography- the style and appearance of printed matter • Some other examples are road signs, shirts, logos, and packaging.
History of Graphics • The history of graphics goes back a long way. Around 15,000-10,000 BC, we noticed the first known visual communication with pictographs and symbols in caves in France. About 105 AD, Chinese government official Ts’ai Lun was credited with inventing paper. In 1276, printing arrives in Europe. Around 1460, the first illustrations were added to books by Albrecht Pfister. About 1796, Aloys Senefelder develops lithography. In 1800, Lord Stanhope invents first printing press.
History of Graphics continued • In 1861, William Morris sets up an art-decorating firm. About 1940, the first issue of Print magazine was printed. In 1969, Douglas Engelbart develops first computer mouse, setting the stage for the future tool of graphic design. Around 1984, Apple releases first Macintosh computer, featuring bitmap graphics. In 1990, Photoshop was released. Since 1990, graphics has developed and software has became easier to use.
