Plate Umpire : Play Play
Plate Umpire : Ready Position & Ball Call Ball Remember Timing: 1. Pitch hits mitt 2. Wait 1/2 second 3. Call the pitch 4. Loud enough for infielders to hear
Plate Umpire : Strike Signal Strike! Loud enough for outfielders to hear Louder for each subsequent strike
Plate Umpire : Check Swing Yes, he went! Ball, No he didn’t go (no point) Use hand closest to the batter Be emphatic Be vocal
What if the outside corner gets blocked? • Do not move to outside. • Raise head to maintain outside corner. • Ask catcher to move over.
Base Umpire on the line: Foul Signal If on the line, show that you are into the game, step forward as each pitch is delivered
Base Umpire : Safe Signal Pull foot or off the bag He is off the bag
Base Umpire: Return to Ready Position
New Batter with runners on: • Give outs and where you will be on a batted ball • Partner echoes the signal Ball/Strike Count: • Use the left hand to indicate balls and the right hand to indicate strikes. • Head high, shoulder width • A closed fist indicates zero and the appropriate number of balls and strikes are indicated by extending your fingers. • For 3-2 count , no fist or the words “full count.” • Partner does not echo count Signals to your partner: • Keep the signals below your shoulders • Try not to draw the attention of anyone but your partner. • Use only one hand to give pre-pitch signals. • Covering First to Third (Rotation Play):. Point to third or make a side to side motion with your right hand with your thumb and pinky extended. • Lost Count: • Step out and ask partner for count • Ask home book for count Pre-Pitch signals
Infield fly: • Let your partner know if you are taking the pop-up based on your pregame • Wait, let fielder settle, point to sky with right hand and say infield fly batter is out or infield fly batter is out if fair • Signal out when ball is caught or dropped • Time play • Two fingers of right hand to wrist • Point to ground with right hand and index finger (indicates plate umpire staying home) • No Runs Score • Look to both dugouts or official scorer • Sweeping arms above head in X fashion • Say “run does not score” • Run scores • Look to both dugouts or official scorer • Point to the plate and then the press box or scorer • State " the run scores“ • Home Run • Right arm over head circling index finger
Catch/no catch • Signal out or safe • Verbalize, safe or out • Ground rule double • Right arm two fingers as you see the ball is out of play • Reiterate the signal as you face the infield • Base award • The appropriate umpire points at the runner to be awarded • States "You - 2nd base", or You - score" while continuing his gesture toward the base being awarded. • When multiple runners are to be given awards, the umpire should begin with the runner closest to home plate, and work back from there
