The UN has a Charter that consists of articles similar to that of the U.S. Constitution
2. To encourage nations to be just in their actions toward each other.
4. To serve as an agency through which nations can work toward these goals
2. Each member is expected to carry out its duties under the charter.
3. Each member agrees to the principle of settling disputes peacefully.
4. Each member agrees not to use force or the threat of force against other nations except in self –defence
5. Each member agrees to help the UN in every action it takes to carry out the purposes of the charter.
6. The UN agrees to act on the principle that nonmember states have the same duties as member states to preserve world peace and security.
7. The UN accepts the principle of not interfering in the internal affairs/domestic problems of members nations, so long as these actions do not harm other nations.
General Assembly This is the one organ of the UN in which all member nations have equal representation
The Security Council The S.C. is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security
There are 15 members of the Security Council, consisting of permanent members and elected members.
The Security Council's five permanent members have the power to veto any substantive resolution:
5 Permanent Members • China • France • Russian Federation • United Kingdom • United States The five permanent members were drawn from the victorious powers of World War II
TheUnited Nations Secretariat The head of the UN Secretariat is the Secretary-General Among other things the Secretary-General selects the 15 judges of the ICJ The current Secretary-General is Ban Ki-moon
TheInternational Court of Justice (known as the World Court or ICJ) This is the primary judicial organ of the United Nations
Its main functions are to settle legal disputes submitted to it by member states. The ICJ should not be confused with the International Criminal Court
TheEconomic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations assists the General Assembly in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Founded in 1948 the WHO combats health problems in underdeveloped countries throughout the world
Through the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund or UNICEF, hundreds of millions of children have been assisted over the last 60 years including $700 million in supplies for children last year
The UN operates safe water and sanitation programs in 90 countries
The UN serves as the principle agency providing aid to 13 million children in Africa orphaned by the AIDS pandemic
