Russian Control Hungarians were patriotic, wanted their country back Religion Communists had banned religion in Hungary Help from the West Hungary wanted to leave Warsaw Pact, thought U.N. would help them

  5. Hungarian revolution Events: Riots in the streets, new leader appointed (Imre Nagy), established democracy, freedom of speech and religion S.U. sent tanks and troops in, violently ended the rebellion and took back control in Hungary About 4000 Hungarians died in the attack

  6. Hungarian revolution Results: 200,000 Hungarians fled their country World is horrified that S.U. could do that to it’s allies Made U.S. more motivated to contain communism

Prague Spring Czechoslovakia, 1968 In Spring of 1968, new leader (Alexander Dubcek) passed new laws giving freedom of speech, more rights for workers and attempts to democratize (give the people more say) the government Dubcek said Czech wanted to stay in Warsaw Pact S.U. worried these reforms could encourage other countries to separate from communism

Prague Spring Czechoslovakia, 1968 Warsaw Pact nations- S.U., Hungary, Poland, East Germany and Bulgaria- sent troops in to reclaim the gov’t in Czech Czech stands down and S.U. reinstates communist government in Czechoslovakia Again, shows that S.U. is unwilling to allow countries to govern themselves
