  3. Thebes • A main rival of Athens • Key force in Greek history • Famous for its silk during the Byzantine era

  4. Corinth • Prospered due to location on the Isthmus of Corinth • Corinth order, the third type of column created here

  5. Colonus • Sophocles’ place of birth • On a hill north of Athens • One of the Attic demes • Demes like the suburbs of Athens

  6. Delphi • Gases that can cause trances are found in the bedrock • The holiest place in the world to the Ancient Greeks • The home of the Oracle of Apollo

  7. Mt. Kithairon • Western section of a mountain range • Border between Athens and Thebes • Also spelled Cithaeron
