  1. Geography Team 2: Emma Vorholt, Nick Porter & Ryan Diaz

  2. Geography is… The study of the placement of physical and human features and how they interact!

  3. Geography Lines of latitude • Geography includes things like climate and the way climate is affected by latitude, elevation, and landforms This is a landform

  4. What is latitude? Lines of latitude are imaginary lines the run horizontally around the earth, like the equator.

  5. How Does It Affect Climate? COLD The farter away from the equator you get, the colder it is. HOT COLD

  6. What are landforms? Landforms are physical features of the earth like mountains, plateaus, valleys, and escarpments.

  7. Valleys Some valleys are made by glacial movement Others are made by rivers

  8. Major Mountain Ranges • The Andes in South America • The Himalayas in Asia • The Alps in Europe • The Rockies in the U.S.

  9. Escarpments An escarpment in west Texas An escarpment in southern Africa

  10. How do Landforms Affect Culture? • Landforms can geographically isolate a group, therefore affecting how they develop in every way.

  11. How do Landforms Affect Climate? • Coastal mountains can block precipitation • Elevation can also affect temperature-the higher the elevation, the colder the climate.

  12. Example • The Himalayan Mountains are home to Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on earth, and because of their high elevation the climate is very cold.

  13. Examples of Both • Alaska has a higher elevation than Louisiana, and it is also farther away from the equator. Thus, Louisiana is warmer than Alaska.

  14. The 4 Spheres There are four spheres of the earth. • The hydrosphere • The lithosphere • The atmosphere • The biosphere

  15. The Lithosphere • The lithosphere is the outer most layer of the earths crust. • It’s made of rigid rock. • This is where plate tectonics happens.

  16. The Biosphere • The biosphere is the living world.

  17. The Hydrosphere • The hydrosphere is all the water on earth.

  18. The Atmosphere • A thin layer of gases above the earths crust. • Divided into 4 parts. • 21% oxygen.

  19. What Are Plate Tectonics? • Plate tectonics is the slow movement of the plates of the earth. • They are caused by convection currents in the mantle.

  20. Pangea • Pangea was a giant super continent millions of years ago. • Over time it drifted apart.
