  1. University of Michigan Health System Survival Flight: Role of the Taubman Health Sciences Library Anna ErcoliSchnitzer and Merle Rosenzweig

  2. Human Factor • Called “Angels with Wings” • Collective expertise enables success • 20 full-time registered nurses • 9 communication specialists • 10 helicopter; 8 fixed-wing pilots • 8 full-time mechanics

  3. Typical Survival Flight • 2 pilots (last year from Pentastar Aviation) • 2 well-trained emergency medical transport specialists • Full complement of advanced life support equipment • Supported by communications team on ground guiding the mission

  4. Praise from Patients • Statement from a paramedic about a patient she transported in 1991: “She was involved in a horrific accident, sustaining terrible injuries. She sent a photo and wanted me to know that she has been married since 2002 and now has two beautiful children. She thinks of me as ‘her hero.’ I am embarrassed at the thought of ‘hero’ and my name in the same sentence. Mostly I’m just proud to have contributed to her recovery, to have made a difference.”

  5. Information Dissemination • Every year UMHS Survival Flight holds 3 annual conferences to gather up • Agenda includes a keynote speaker, often a forensic pathologist, and other experts with relevant topics • During the 3-day spring conference, librarians from the University of Michigan Taubman Health Sciences Library for the past four years have staffed a table at the event distributing sources of reliable medical literature

  6. Results • Conference goers often recognize us and return to find out the latest information • Some attendees learn for the first time that they have alternatives to WebMD--ones with no advertising • Business cards are exchanged if questions cannot be answered on the spot • Friendly relationships are established • Served over 125 individuals at recent conference • Slogan: “Database is as friendly as WE are!” • Taubman Health Sciences librarians are invited back

  7. Finale • This year the librarians have been invited to Frankenmuth to attend a second UMHS Survival Flight Conference in early November, one we have never been invited to previously.

  8. History of UM Survival Flight • 26th anniversary with multitude of rescues • 3 helicopters and one fixed-wing jet • Flights of over 160, 000 miles/year • Over 4 million miles since inception in 1983 • Medical staff from UMHS • Aircraft and pilot services leased
