INTENTIONALLY! • Borrowing from someone else • Downloading (all or part) from the Internet + copy & paste • Copying from a book or other source • Buying!
Letting your mother/father/sibling/ friend/boyfriend/girlfriend/ grandparent/cat do your work for you or help you too much
REPERCUSSIONS • Teachers lose faith in their students, become wary and suspicious so… • They limit choices for topics to avoid opportunities for plagiarism and … • They go over every essay/report much more thoroughly which … • Takes much more marking time which … • Leaves less time to spend planning good lessons and helping students. EVERYBODY LOSES
RESULTS OF PLAGIARISM AT JOHN F. ROSS C.V.I. • If plagiarism is found, a 3 step graduated system of consequences will be applied. • Penalties will increase in severity and eventually can result in a mark of zero, suspension and/or loss of credit. • How to avoid plagiarism is taught in classes: therefore, students cannot claim that their plagiarism was unintentional.
PENALTIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH • Requirement to submit a new piece of work or partial or total loss of marks for an assignment or a course • An official warning that the next offence will be punished by suspension or expulsion from the university • Rescinding of university-funded scholarships or bursaries
Suspension from the university for one or two years • A recommendation for expulsion from the university • A recommendation to revoke or rescind a degree
HOW CAN I USE MY RESEARCH???? • Take point form notes • Copy intended quotes exactly and use “ ” • Summarize • Use your own words • Highlight important facts and ideas • Add your own thoughts even while note-taking • Use graphic organizers
