History of the Judiciary Committee • Was created in response to growing complexities in the American government • The original purpose and responsibility of the Committee focused on issues that the committee hears today including: the courts, law enforcement, and judicial administration • The committee helped pass the reconstruction amendments including the Thirteenth Amendment(outlawing slavery), Fourteenth Amendment(citizenship), and Fifteenth Amendment(voting rights). • The committee played a role during the civil rights movement.
Job of the Committee • The consideration of nominations and pending legislation. • Executive nominations for positions in the Department of Justice, Office of National Drug Control Policy, the United States Parole Commission, the United States Sentencing Commission, and the State Justice Institute, as well as select nominations for the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Commerce are referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee. • Legislation, resolutions, messages, petitions, memorials and many others are other areas the committee see’s to cover.
Chairman - Patrick J. Leahy, Vermont • Was the chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations beforehand. • Introduced and helped pass the OPEN Government Act in 2007 • Was a graduate from Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont • Earned his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center • He served for eight years as State's Attorney in Chittenden County, Vermont • Was one of three outstanding prosecutors in the United States before becoming chairman
Ranking Member - Jeff Sessions, Alabama • Received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Alabama • Served in the United States Army Reserve from 1973 to 1986, finishing as a rank of Captain • Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama • United States Attorney for Alabama's Southern District • Alabama Attorney General • State's chief legal officer • Was author of the Honoring Every Requirement of Exemplary Service (HEROES) Act, in May 2005
