2. University Update • President Genshaft launched 50th anniversary last month with a press conference announcing that the economic impact of USF on this community is $3.2 billion annually • She affirmed at the Council of Deans on Monday her vision of a top 50 research university: “we are a research institution, not a teaching institution” • Provost Khator will be introducing the new Dean of the Graduate School today • Candidates for International Affairs Dean and Director of the Patel Center will be on campus • Search firm hired for VP of Development

3. HSC Update • We have a new Senior AVP for Research, Dr. Abdul Rao • Paula Knaus transferring to the College on May 15th • Dr. Judy Karshmer is leaving to assume the dean’s position at U San Francisco • VP’s office now on the third floor of the CMS Building – (we’re supposed to call it the “USF Health CMS Building”)

4. Marketing and Development • USF Health has now been institutionalized – notice new signage on the campus • Michael Hoad and I are now meeting weekly to develop and produce materials and messages for the College keying off the overall theme • Dr. Klasko has elected to centralize Development, so we are now recruiting a marking director instead of a development director

5. College Update • Moves! • Community and Family Health has relocated to their new home in the Chiles Center Building • Health Policy and Management are moving upstairs to the space vacated by CFH • Epidemiology is expanding around the corner • Academic Affairs will be moving to the space vacated by HPM, including Dr. Liller and Kay White

7. Dean’s Public Health Lecture Series • Friday February 17 • Dr. David Ashkin, Medical Director, AG Holley Hospital • Thursday March 2 (COM Dean’s Lecture) • Dr. David Nash, expert on health outcomes • Division with highest attendance gets $5,000 • Friday March 24 • Dr. Louis Keith, Northwestern University • Friday April 7 (National Public Health Week) • Dr. Rony Francois (invited)

Faculty Searches • Searches Ongoing • Associate Dean for Research – scheduling 2nd interviews • CFH Methodologist in final negotiations • CFH Health Educator – completed visits • Global Health Communicable Disease – Dennis Kyle arriving April 24th • Global Health Program Development – Dr. Jack LeSar • Global Health Infectious Disease/Biodefense commencing • EOH Environmental Chemist in final negotiations • EOH Safety commencing • HPM Finance Economist – Dr. John Large • HPM Senior Scholar in preparation

9. Collaborations: HSC • Plans are now in full swing for the new clinic buildings here and at TGH • Our role primarily is in designing the data system that will hopefully support a shared research agenda, and supporting the creation of a community resource library • We are co-sponsoring the biennial Moffitt conference on Cultural Literacy • We just submitted a grant to AAMC/CDC to integrate population health content into medical school curricula

10. Collaborations: State/Local • Florida MPH Programs • Convened a meeting here on Jan 27 of all MPH programs – very interesting • FPHA will be August 1-4 • Florida Department of Health • Women’s Health Initiatives • Preparedness • Training for Senior Epidemiologists last week

11. Collaborations: State/Local • Visits to Local Health Departments • Manatee • Pasco • Sarasota follow-up visit here • Community Groups • STEPS (CHC’s, YMCA, Heart, Lung, etc) • Hillsborough County Health and Human Services • East Tampa

12. Collaborations: National • We are hosting a NIOSH Town Hall Meeting here on Monday (Marshall Center) to gather public comment for NORA’s future research agenda • Several of us are participating in the further refinement of ASPH MPH Competencies • I’ve been named to the National Board of Public Health Examiners

13. Collaborations: International • Established USF Health Office in Panama • Ideal location for training • Vaccinology program this summer • International Health Ed course this summer • Marena visiting to enhance field placement opportunities • Opportunities for research • Dr. van Olphen visiting to discuss virology projects • PAHO interested in exploring extensions of the successful summer EPI program

14. Collaborations: International • Successful visit to Malaysia in October • University of Malaysia Sarawak offering an MPH through its Medical School • Interested in sending students here for PhD training • Interested in faculty and student exchanges • May need our help in teaching • Hosting a student intern this summer • Offered us office space!

15. Collaborations: International • You all heard about the trip to India in December • “we didn’t sign anything” • Dr. Kiran Patel interested in nursing education –no interest in public health, yet • Dr. Ann DeBaldo part of a US team working with the Public Health Foundation of India to establish six schools of public health in India • We are continuing to explore possible collaborations in Shanghai

16. Collaborations: International • Dr. Liller had a successful visit to the Bahamas – they are interested in us serving as their school of public health • Want to send Ministry of Health employees for MPH training, certificates and short courses • Willing to host student interns • MOU allows for other opportunities should we choose to explore them • Dr. DeBaldo joined a group in Belize to discuss educational opportunities (largely community colleges!)

17. Collaborations • In my external role, I visit, meet, discuss opportunities and then bring them back here • I discuss these with chairs and center directors and faculty that I am aware have interests • The goal is to seek partnerships that further our mission and our agenda consistent with the University’s desire to become a top 50 research institute, to increase the number of graduate students and graduates, to more deliberately engage with the community, and to internationalize

18. Future College Events • Chairs have suggested that we have a session to here from each department about its faculty, its programs, its mission and it success • We could do one big session, or we could feature each department at a luncheon that I would host over the next five months – thoughts?

19. Future College Events • I will be scheduling a one-day faculty retreat • The focus will be on our MPH curricula • I want us to view the program anew – from a clean slate • We face increasing competition • New CEPH criteria, new competencies, new national exam • Changing face of public health • Given our historic mission, how will we assure our graduates are prepared?
