Engineering Experiences • The brand for our education outreach • Signature programs include FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge • Includes commitment to Project Lead the Way (Iowa) • Additional education outreach activities include: • Engineers Week, Future City, Global Marathon • Team America Rocketry Contest (TARC) • Real Word Design Challenge (RWDC) • Virtual Reality Educational Pathfinder (VREP) • Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) • Career presentations • One-to-one tutoring • On-campus (at Rockwell Collins) activities include • High School internships and job shadowing • Facilitates plant/lab tours – PLTW, Introduce a Girl to Engineering • Real World Teacher Externships 1,800 Rockwell Collins employees registered on Volunteer Portal20,000 volunteer hours logged in 2010-2011 School Year
Engineering Experiences – FIRST Objective 1: Attract students to math & science • Sponsor FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) • Team grants, teacher stipends, tournaments • Program evaluation • Program infrastructure and growth • Includes employee and retiree engagement • Team mentors, tournament judges and volunteers • Representation on state advisory teams • Ambassadors at events such as FIRST World Championship Partners include: • Iowa State University and University of Iowa serve as FIRST affiliates • Schools and nonprofit organizations coordinate teams (Girls Scouts, 4-H, Boys & Girls Clubs, etc.)

Engineering Experiences – Career Awareness Objective 2: Make STEM careers attractive • Focuses on experiences that take place at Rockwell Collins • Includes a progression of opportunities • Tours/special visits (e.g. Introduce a Girl to Engineering) • Job shadowing – 4 hours • High School career exploratory internships – 90 hours • High School Technical Internships (HSTI) – year long • College internships and co-operative programs • Includes employees as mentors, tour guides, speakers Partners include: • Area school districts, Workplace Learning Connection, AEAs, Junior Achievement, Engineers Week Foundation, Kirkwood Community College, Trusted Partner colleges and universities

Objective 2 Measure: # of conversions (from program to program and into full-time hires) K-12 data • 85% of High School Technical Interns (HSTI) participated in at least one Engineering Experiences program • 44% of HSTI participated in FIRST (largest single program) College data • Informal survey of RC co-ops and interns suggests 50 – 60% participated in Engineering Experiences-type programs New Hire data • Measure established in May 2011 (following new grad offers) • Data collection on fall/winter grads was nominal <10% • Baseline to be established on 2012 summer grad offers
Engineering Experiences – Educator Support Objective 3: Position Iowa as a model for preparing STEM educators and delivering STEM education • Advocate on behalf of public policy issues that advance STEM education in Iowa • Champion efforts to enhance STEM educator preparation and recruitment in Iowa • Participate in programs that support real-world learning opportunities for STEM educators Partners include: • IMSEP, School leaders, Education associations, AEAs, Workplace Learning Connection, Iowa businesses, industry groups (IBC, ABI, TAI), etc.

Objective 3 Measure: Advancements in STEM education in Iowa • Creation and endorsement of STEM Education Roadmap • Formation of Governor’s STEM Education Advisory Council • Participation on and activity of STEM Teacher Recruitment & Preparation working group • Support for Real World Teacher Externship program • 2 in 2010, 4 in 2011 Teachers who complete Externships are more likely to: • Implement hands-on problem-solving and scientific investigations • Help students investigate possible career opportunities in mathematics or science • Integrate the course curriculum with other subjects or fields of study • Prepare students for the kinds of expectations they will encounter in a work setting • Use more technology in teaching
