Macarthur Disability Services • Established in 1982 to provide programs to people living with a disability in the Macarthur area, MDS now comprises the following – • Day Programs (CP, Access, Life Choices and Active Ageing and Stronger together) • Transition to Work • Leisure link programs for Children (After School and School Holiday Programs) • Behaviour Intervention Support Services • Personal Helpers and Mentors Program • Macarthur Personnel (Employment) • Complete Property Services (Supported Employment) • Home and Community Care Training • MDS Training Centre • Community Development • Home and Community Care information and referral service

Action Plan In March 2009, 2 staff attended the Behaviour Support Policy Training and developed the following action plan - Managers to undergo training - Policies and procedures to be drafted - Forms to be updated and created - Strategic Management Team to be briefed on new policies and procedures - Staff to undergo training - Evaluation of implementation - Site audits of Restricted Practices currently in place - Restricted Practices Approval to commence

Responsiveness and Scope • Action taken • - RPA Mechanism reviewed and updated • - All approvals to go to one person • - Lifestyle and Environment reviews to be completed as part of the process • Individual Support Reviews as required • Application across all programs • Barriers • - RPA Mechanism • - Accountability • Support for staff during the approval process • ADHC funded programs only

  5. Parent / Carer Requests Action taken - Information for parents on a case by case basis - Quarterly Stakeholder forums Barriers - Parents requesting Restricted Practices be used - Guardianship

  6. Staff Knowledge • Barriers • - Coordinating training for all staff • - Practical application through programs • Staff requesting ‘concrete’ examples • Action taken • Further training on a site by site basis • Behaviour Support Pyramid created • - Individual review as required • - “Question the practice if….” posters

  7. On reflection what occurred was – - Policies and Procedures Drafted - Restricted Practices Mechanism Discussed - Behaviour Support Pyramid created - Strategic Management Team briefed on policy and procedure Drafts - All staff completed training (including managers) - Restricted Practices Mechanism Revised - Restricted Practice Approval commenced - Policies and Practices revised to ensure we are responsive as possible - Further training for staff as required - “Question the practice if….” posters
