7. What is a Four-Year Plan? • Opportunity to design a rigorous and challenging plan that will assist in achieving student’s post-secondary goals. • The Freshmen Counselor will meet with students in the Fall to create their plan. • Planning begins NOW and continues through high school.

9. California High School Exit Exam(CAHSEE) • Twoportions to the test • math • reading/writing • Must pass to receive a diploma. • If CAHSEE not passed but meet all KHSD subject requirements, student will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Freshmen Promotion A freshman will be promoted if he/she accomplishes one of the following: • Passes at least 45 credits (10 credits/class/yr) • Passes English and math • Scores proficient on Algebra and English California Standards Tests. • Or special circumstances with approval of principal and Asst. NCAA • For eligibility requirements to play at Division I and II schools check NCAA Clearinghouse website, http://www.ncaa.org. • Students will register with NCAA the Spring semester of their junior year. • Students who want to play Division I must have 16 core courses by end of their senior year, Division II, 14 core courses. • Please have your student see their counselor to help track your student’s academic choices.

20. HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED IN HIGH SCHOOL • Set aside time and place for homework. • Monitor student’s progress by weekly progress reports, email teachers, or call the school @ 587-0925 and ask for a phone message to be placed in teacher’s boxes. • http://liberty.kernhigh.org/

21. How To Help Continued • Buy your student a daily planner. • The coursework is not meant to be easy. We want your student to be challenged. • We do not advocate the “easy way out.” • Deficiency Notices are mailed to parent approx. mid Sept., Nov., Feb, and Apr. • Report cards are mailed to parent approx. end of October, mid January, mid March, and mid June. • Semester grades are on the transcript.

22. Using the Library • Library hours: 7:45am to 3:45pm Monday through Thursday and 7:45am to 3:21pm on Fridays. • Student must have an I.D. to check out library books. • Overdue books are charged $.20 per day per book. If book is lost the student is charged the full price of the book.

23. Online Synergy Access • Parents are given an access code to create an online account in Synergy. You should receive it today at Orientation. This allows you to monitor your student’s progress. • Parents can monitor attendance and grades at home or through an app, Student Vue, on the cell phone. Parents also have access to teachers’ email. • Contact teachers if you have any questions regarding grades or behavior.

24. How to Contact Your Student’s Counselor • Students may fill out a “Request to See Counselor” Form, found in the Counseling Office and your student will be called out of class. • Parents may email the counselor or teacher to answer questions regarding their student. Email addresses are on our website under the “Staff” menu. • Parents may call the school and ask to speak with counselor or leave a message if the counselor is unavailable. • Appointments are highly recommended to see a counselor as dropping in may be difficult to accommodate depending on the counselor’s schedule.

28. P.E. Excuses • All students with excused PE, without a doctor’s note, must still dress out and walk the track during PE. • The student is required to have a Doctor’s note if they will be out for more than three days.

29. Schedules • Students pick up their official blue schedule in the gym on the first day of school. • If a student does not pick it up, they will automatically be dropped from our school. • If the student is sick, a phone call should be made to the Attendance Office in order to prevent a drop.

31. Lunch • Students may purchase lunch from the Cafeteria or snack bar. They must have their I.D. to get through the lunch line quickly. • Pre-payment Program: parents are able to prepay and the student use their ID card to access their account to pay for lunch. Parents may mail in payments to the cafeteria or send money/check with their student to prepay on their account in the cafeteria. • Free or Reduced Lunch Applications may be picked up in the Administration Building.

32. Bus Schedule • Bus Routes are printed in the Bakersfield Californian the week before school starts. • If you do not receive the Bakersfield Californian, you may pick up a bus schedule in the Administration Building.

33. Parent Pick-Up/Drop-Off • Parents should pick-up or drop-off their students along Jewetta Avenue in front of the Administration parking lot or in the back parking lot by the gym. • Do not pick-up or drop-off in the staff parking lot in front of the Administration Building.

34. Absences Or Off-Campus • Absences must be cleared within 72 hours or becomes a cut. • Call 587-0925 to clear an absences. • Send note with student (including id #) to obtain an off campus pass. • If late, send a note with student. Your student must check in with the Attendance Office before going to class.

35. Cell Phone Policy • All cell phones, pagers, and other communication devices must have the power turned off. • They must NOT be accessible during school hours. • The Kern High School District is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged electronic communication devices or any charges incurred as a result.

36. Academic Honor Code • The code states that all students will complete all assigned work without unauthorized assistance from others AND without providing unauthorized assistance to others. • The Academic Honesty Code applies not only to examination situations, but also to ALL student work completed for credit.
