Story telling elements that you consider Theme: the main idea in the story. Every word in the essay must be focused on this sentence. Plot: Telling a story requires a dramatic structure to make the story interesting; Beginning->conflict->rising action->climax-> ending (denouement). Style: Do you want to make the story funny? Then choose the words that reveal the funny side of you. Characters: You need to decide who are involved in the story. Use their actual names, not somebody or someone. Accident/incident: Without this, you don’t have a story. You need to state clearly what it is about. Background information, (five W’s and one H): If you suddenly begin the story without this, your readers will be confused. Setting (time and place), and scenes: These will help readers visualize the accident/incident. Use their real names.
Writing Strategies • Narration (point of view, I, you, s/he) Do not use “you”, the second person point of view in your essay unless you want to establish familiarity or closeness with your readers. • Description. Use figurative language, metaphor, simile. My love is a red, red rose. My love is like a red, red rose. • Dialogue. Use it only when necessary or at an important moment.
