Chapter 5 Planning Your Shoot
There is no correct way to plan • Different types of shoots require different degrees of planning • Story boarding (Some don’t use it all) • Alfred Hitchcock • Blocking on set • Woody Allan
Story Boarding • Comic book like representations of the images in your production. • Quality is not usually a factor • As long as the crew can decipher the compositionand framing of the shots • Even if you don’t storyboard • You should have some type of similarprocess
Shots and Coverage • Once shooting begins • Make sure you get all the coverage you will need for the editing room • Coverage • Refers to the number and types of shots you need to cover a particular scene
With Storyboards • Less is more • Storyboards are a visualization tool • Not an end product. • The purpose is to get you to think about your shots and angles
Legal Legwork • Review page 106 & 107
Location Scouting • Will the owners of the property let you shoot there • Do you need a permit to shoot there • Do you need both the inside and outside • Is location reasonable distance from rest of shoot • Does location need modification • Is the location to noisy • Location requirements of your equipment • Can you successfully shoot there with you equipment • Light and sound
Production Design • This is the planning of the look of your film • Includes • Elements on theset • The way the movie will be shotand cut • Continuity • What is it and why does it matter?
DIY Art Direction • Get rid of the white walls • Paint over the dirt • Thrifty props • Negative space • Foreground objects • Be wary of mirrors
Visual Planning for Documentaries • Many believe a documentary requires • Turning on the camera • Shooting • There is a lot of planning that is involved • Not necessarily scriptwriting • Types of shots • Locations • Sounds • You want to develop a look and/or feel for your project
