PLC- The Power of Professional Learning Communities “The most promising strategy for substantive, sustained school improvement is building the capacity of school personnel to function as a professional learning community. The path of change in the classroom lies within and through professional communities.” Richard Dufour
3 Big Ideas of a PLC • Ensure all Student Learn • Build a Culture of Collaboration • Focus on Results
Characteristics of a Professional Learning Community • Shared Mission, Vision, Values and Goals • Collaborative Teams • Collective Inquiry • Action orientation/ experimentation • Commitment to continuous improvement • Results Orientation
1. Ensuring all students learn • Four Critical Questions 1. What do we want students to learn? 2. How will we know if they’ve learned it? 3. What will we do if they don’t? 4. What will we do if they already know it?
2. Building a Culture of Collaboration “Collaborative cultures, which by definition have close relationships are indeed powerful, but unless they are focusing on the right things they may end up being powerfully wrong.” “Improving schools require collaborative cultures….without collaborative skills and relationships, it is not possible to learn and to continue to learn as much as you need to know to improve.” -Michael Fullan
3. Focus on Results • This link best shows how results (and unexpected results at that!)must drive the process. • Careful with assumptions about your Data • PLC’s are results-based: • Here is a clip to show how in order to fully appreciate data objectively prepare for anything and be ready to adjust! • Escalator.wmv
Focus on Results Assess Learn Improve Let Proper Assessments drive instruction (Learning) and improvement
Improvement Process Elements What future are you pursuing? What have you accomplished? Monitor and Adjust I What is your current reality? What actions will you take to improve? PLAN Similar to PLC
