Filler-Deficient Zone in Arc WeldsSindo Kou, University of Wisconsin, DMR 0455484 It is often necessary in arc welding to use a filler wire different from the workpiece in composition, e.g., to prevent cracking, but segregation can exist in the resultant weld and degrade the weld quality. Four different mechanisms for segregation have been proposed and verified. In order to verify each one clearly, welds have been made using a pure metal or a simple alloy as the workpiece and the filler wire. The two photos on the right show segregation caused by two different mechanisms. Composition distributions across the welds have been measured to verify the mechanisms.
